Submission Guidelines for Journal of Multi-Cultural Contents Studies

Chapter 1. Manuscript submission

  1. 1. Journal of Multi-Cultural Contents Studies is a professional academic journal which publishes research articles relevant to studies on multi- cultural issues and contents. The journal also publishes reviews of books on multiculturalism.
  2. 2. Members of the institute and professional researchers on multiculturalism and multi-cultural contents are qualified to submit for publication.
  3. 3. All manuscripts must be submitted online at the Cultural Contents and Technology Research Institute’s website(http://www.m-culture.or.kr). It is the responsibility of the author to check the guidelines before submission.
  4. 4. Any manuscript which fails to adhere to the submission guidelines will not be accepted. Articles cannot be revised after submission.
  5. 5. A submission fee applies for each submitted manuscript, and a publication fee applies for each accepted article.
  6. 6. The manuscript must be the author’s own original work and must not duplicate any other previously published work.
  7. 7. All submitted manuscripts are screened through a review process in accordance with the editorial policy.

Chapter 2. Manuscript format

  1. 8. (Language and format) Manuscripts are accepted in either Korean or English. Manuscripts written in Korean must conform to the current rules of Korean spelling and manuscript paper. Manuscripts written in English must follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. for references.
  2. 9. General formatting:
    1. 1) Manuscripts should be at least 10,000 words long and no longer than 12,000 words. Word count includes endnotes. Manuscripts that exceed this will incur additional submission fee.
    2. 2) Manuscripts must be organized in the following order: title page, author’s name, abstract and keywords in English, table of contents, main text, references, abstract and keywords in Korean. English abstracts must include the title and author’s name in English, must not exceed 100 words, and must contain 5 or more keywords.
    3. 3) References must be in English and must strictly follow the reference style guide.
  3. 10. Manuscript formatting and numbering:
    1. 1) Layout
      1. (1) Paper size: A4(210×297mm)
      2. (2) Page margins: Top & bottom 20mm, left & right 15mm, gutter 0mm, header 10mm; footer 15mm.
      3. (3) Line spacing: 160%
      4. (4) Font: Scale 100%, spacing 0%, size 10point(footnote 9pt, references 9.5pt), Times New Roman
      5. (5) Paragraph format: Left margin 0point, Right margin 0point, indent 2point(footnote 3pt, references 3pt)
    2. 2) Section numbering
      1. Level 1: I, II, III (12point, Times New Roman, indent 2 spaces)
      2. Level 2: 1. 2. 3. (11point, Times New Roman, indent 2 spaces)
      3. Level 3: 1) 2) 3) (11point, Times New Roman, indent 2 spaces)
      4. Level 4: (1) (2) (3) (10point, Times New Roman, indent 2 spaces)
      5. Level 5: ① ② ③ (10point, Times New Roman, indent 2 spaces)

Chapter 3. Citing references in the text

  1. 11. When referencing other works, the below style and examples should be followed and written in English. Cases not included in the below list of examples must refer to the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.

    2. Examples of referencing style

    1. 1) When citing a work by one or two authors give the authors’ surname(s) and year of publication each time it is cited.

      Example: Park and Kim(1998) …
      Shin and Lee(1997) …

    2. 2) When citing a work by three, four, or five authors, give all the surnames; when the work is cited more than once, give the first author’s surname followed by “et al.” and the year.

      Example: Choi, Kim and Choi(1998) argues… first citation
      Choi et al.(1998) argues… subsequent citation
      Williams, Johnes and Smith(1985) argues … first citation
      Williams et al.(1995) shows… subsequent citation

    3. 3) When the author’s surname and year are given in parentheses, separate the final author by an ampersand “&”. But when there are two authors, omit a comma “,” in front of “&”.

      Example: Social relationship(Choi, Kim, & Choi, 1998)
      Multicultural education(Kim & Yoo, 2004)

      1. (1) Authors with same surname: If two or more authors have the same surname and their works have the same publication year, the surname should be followed by the initials of the first names.

        Example: Hospitalized stress(Volicer, K. A., 1974; Volicer, M. Y., 1974).
        Social support(Kim, N. C., 1998; Kim, C. J., 1998).

      2. (2) Citing more than one work in a single parentheses:
        • －When citing more than one work by the same author, order the reference by the year of publication, separated by a comma “,”. The author’s name should not be repeated more than once in a single citation.

          Example: Work in Korean(Kim, 1976, 1978).
          Work in English(Price, 1989, 1991).

        • －When citing more than one work by the same author and same publication year, a letter case letter should follow the publication year. Do not repeat the publication year.

          Example: Work in Korean(Kim, 1980-a, 1980-b, in press-a, in press-b).
          Work in English(Price, 1980-a, 1980-b, in-press-a, in- press-b).

        • －When citing more than one work by different authors, provide the citation in alphabetical order, each citation separated by a semi-colon “;”.

          Example: studies on the North Korean refugees(Brown & Smith, 1987; choi, 1988; Lee, 1975; Williams, 1991)…

    4. 4) When citing a work by more than six authors, only the first author’s surname should be given followed by et al. and the year. When the author’s surname and year are given in parentheses, the name should be followed by et al.

      Example: Choi et al.(1998) argues in their study… applies to both first citation and subsequent citations

      Example: they confirmed it(Choi et al., 1998).

  2. 12. When it is considered necessary to provide the precise reference, source citation, and page number(s) of reference materials in the main text, the page number(s) should follow the year, separated by a colon “:”.

    Example: Korean Society and Multiculturalism(Kang, 2013: 145) argued the following.

    Example: Multicultural Education(Kim & Yoo, 2004: 234-235)

Chapter 4. List of Works Cited

  1. 13. All work cited in the text must be listed in the works cited pages. The number of entries must not exceed 40 and the entries should be arranged in the alphabetical order of the authors’ surnames. Multiple works by the same author should be listed in chronological order, with the earliest date first.
  2. 14. All references should be in English. Titles of magazines, books, thesis, report, and journal volumes must be italicized. For book titles, capitalize only the first letter; for magazine titles, capitalize the first letters of each word and provide the full magazine title.
  3. 15. If there are more than six authors, provide the names of six authors followed by et al.

    Example: John, P. W., Alexandra, P. B., Max, K. B., Peter, J. L., Peter, F., et al.(2005).

    1. 1) Periodicals
      1. (1) An article in a scholarly journal
        Entries should follow the following format: Each author’s last name, initial (publication year). Title of article. Full Title of Publication, Volume (Issue), beginning page-last page. If each issue starts with page 1, the issue must be provided after the volume.

        Example: Thompson, L.(1991). Family work: Women’s sense of fairness. Journal of Family Issues, 12, 181-196.

      2. (2) An article in a magazine

        Posner, M. I.(1993, October 29). Seeing in the mind. Science, 262, 673-674.

      3. (3) An article in a newspaper: Author(Year, Month Day of Publication). Title of Article, Title of Newspaper, Page(s).

        Walker, L. A.(1993, July 23). The battered woman. New York Times, 7.

    2. 2) Books
      1. (1) A book: Author(Publication year), Title of Book(edition), Publication City: Publisher.

        Example: Archer, J., & Lloyed, B.(1985). Sex and gender. New York: Cambridge University Press.

      2. (2) An edition of a book

        Yllo, K. & Bograde, M.(ed.).(1990). Feminist perspectives on wife abuse. Newbury Park, CA: Sage.

      3. (3) A book with no author or editor

        Merriam-Webster’s collegiate dictionary(10th ed.).(1993). Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster.

      4. (4) A republished book

        Rosenthal, R.(1987). Meta-analysis procedures for social research(Rev. ed.). Newbury park, CA: Sage.

      5. (5) A translated book

        Shilling, C.(2003). The body and social theory(I. S. Lim, Trans.) Seoul: Nanam(Original work published 1993).

      6. (6) A reference book (encyclopedia, dictionary)

        Sadie, S.(ed.).(1980). The new Grove dictionary of music and musicians (6th ed., Vols. 1-20). London: Macmillan.

    3. 3) A work in an edited collection: Author(year), Title of essay. Editor’s Name(s), Title of Collection(pages). City of Publication: Publisher.

    4. 4) Dissertations and Theses: Author(Year). Title. Name of degree- granting university, City.
      1. (1) A doctoral dissertation

        Park, W. B.(2013). Study on Multicultural Policies Orientation and Multicultural Acceptability of Korean Foreign Affairs Police(diss.), Dongguk University, Seoul.

      2. (2) A Master’s thesis

    5. 5) Lectures, speeches, or other oral presentations at conferences and symposia: Speaker’s name, year, month of presentation, title of presentation, conference topic(conference name), City.
